Knitting and sewing were among the most important activities for the Shaker sisters. They were engaged in this work year-round. Their textiles were often simple but also rich with orderly patterns, symmetry, and a coherent, aesthetic integrity that captured the essence of their lives, ideas and values as Shakers. In this workshop we delve into some of these Shaker textile traditions. And then depart from them into the “world of embellishment” as you learn to use your handmade, knitted fabric as a canvas for embroidery. Participants will work on small pieces, designed to develop embroidery skills that work well with knitted fabrics. Once learned, you will apply these skills to create an embroidered handknit item of your choice, ranging from simple to complex. The instructor has designed several embroidery patterns using a variety of materials that can be incorporated into your project. You will receive a selection of these patterns during the workshop, so you can continue adding embroidery to your handmade knits at home. This workshop is a great opportunity to get an early start on knitted gifts for the holidays.
In the workshop, you will learn:
The unique characteristics of the knitted surface as a canvas for embroidery and how to make the most of these characteristics.
Design considerations for embroidering knitted fabric: tension, colors, etc.
Embroidery techniques with different fibers and embellishments: yarn, cording, ribbon, beads, yarn buttons, etc.
How to apply several different embroidery stitches to knitted fabric: chain stitch, French knots, cross stitch, running stitch, creative lettering, etc.
How to transform a simple knitted item into something much more intricate and embedded with personal meaning.
Many tips and tricks throughout the day as well as cameos about Shaker fiber art and crafts.
Workshop participants will need to bring their own knitting needles and other tools (embroidery needles, scissors, etc.) and pay the materials fee in advance. This fee covers all patterns, fiber, some supplies and handouts for the workshop. Participants will have the option to purchase additional yarn, patterns, tools and other supplies on the day of the workshop.
