Join us at Café Bon Vivant on December 12 from 6 to 8 pm to celebrate Leslie Chandler's solo art show: Canadian Moments. Light refreshments will be provided, good vibes will be abundant.
When asked about her artistic practice, Leslie shares "I am often asked when I became an artist. My response: forever. I was privileged to watch my father, an accomplished artist, paint in his home studio. Having grown up in semi-rural British Columbia, my family spent every possible moment exploring mountain trails, fishing in remote lakes and clam-digging on wind-swept beaches. As a result, I developed a profound love for art and Canada’s wild landscapes. It is no surprise that my work continues to reflect this
combined heritage.
I am especially drawn to the interplay of light, colour and form: how dead winter leaves seem to spring to life when backlit; how moonglow on a lake’s surface choreographs an ephemeral dance; or how cool shadows contrast dramatically with warm sunlight dappling across a rural path.
My work is mostly in acrylic on canvas, expressing my interpretation of the natural landscape in contemporary realism to abstract styles. In addition, I dabble in acrylic and alcohol inks, watercolour, and occasionally in linocut printmaking. I love painting en plein air, but I usually work in my home studio where I offer ArtpARTner Workshops to adults. As a nod to my maternal heritage, I enjoy creating Ukrainian Easter eggs, especially with my six grandchildren. Through my artistic voice, I hope to inspire others to cherish and protect Canada’s natural environment.
Contributing to local artistic endeavours matters to me, and I spent 34 years teaching French Immersion Visual Arts in four Canadian provinces. I hold memberships in Russell’s Autumn in the Country and the Manotick Art Association, and am an Exhibiting Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. My paintings are found in private collections across Canada, the USA, England and Denmark.
My husband and I are proud to make our home in Russell."
For those unable to attend the vernissage, you will be able to experience Leslie Chandler's works in the cafe from November 25, 2025, through to January 24, 2026.
