3 of the Top 20 must be Silver/Asian Carp on ice because at 8 am these will be used for the U.S. Military Team Cookoff. Each branch of the service will have a 3 person Culinary Specialist team coming to Shreveport to use your fish and create CarpBalls from a recipe made by a famous French chef who will be on scene to be one of the judges. He will also be using your fish to teach the public how to cook Carp. See the recipe used in the book “If you can’t beat ‘em, eat ‘em” available through your library. The military Cook teams will compete for 2 hours with judging at 10 am and then the 1000s of fishballs will be served to casino gamblers and distributed throughout the homeless community by the Lions Club.
The Team winning the 100% prize will be paid out at the conclusion of weighin. All teams will be lined up (with enormous Lions Club yellow vested traffic control) upon approach to the casino parking lot. For those of you staying multiple days, we recommend sleeping at the Red River Marina Thursday night/Friday morning and then at the LIVE Casino Saturday day/night. Travel home would be Sunday.
We are still looking for a sponsor to add $1,000 prize for the biggest fish overall as well.
The Carp jump out of the water year around at lock #5 on the Red River. LA Fish/Wildlife says that they have migrated north up the Red River to Shreveport and even into the Red Chute Bayou up as far as Sligo, LA. Because this is a bowfishing/Military cookoff/homeless feed multi-day event, we anticipate huge media coverage at the event. We encourage your family members that are not sleeping Saturday to attend the cooking class with the French chef.
The Lions Club will be selling a BBQ dinner Friday afternoon from 3-4 pm. We hope to have USCG Auxiliary personnel on scene to give free boat inspections and on patrol throughout the night on the Red River as well as the local Sheriff Rescue Boats to assist you as necessary. Please ensure you have sufficient life jackets.
