Introduction to Indigenous Gardening

Explore the origins of intentional plant and tree cultivation in North America. Indigenous peoples around the world used nature for food, medicine, dyes, clothing, and more for thousands of years—long before European colonists arrived. With roughly 1,000 different tribes and nations, cultivation practices varied widely depending on time, place, and climate.

This class will also highlight indigenous plants that can be grown locally in Elgin, connecting historical practices to modern gardening.
