Event Name: Geology & History at Oro Grande Mining District

Step back in time to the historic mining district of Oro Grande where gold, silver, copper, and iron once lured prospectors. Led by geologist Lance Robert, this trip combines history and hands-on geology:
• See where ancient magma intrusions met marine sediments 300 million years ago
• Spot minerals like garnet, hematite, pyrite, chrysocolla, and azurite
• Walk the old railroad path and see remnants of mining history
• Enjoy spectacular views of the Jarilla Mountains
• Difficulty: Moderate (short hikes, one longer ~1 mile walk with incline)
• Family friendly: Kids welcome if they can walk uneven terrain
• Bring: Water, lunch, sunscreen, hiking shoes, rock hammer.
High-clearance vehicles recommended; carpooling available.
