The spine is often described as a “column,” but that image oversimplifies one of the body’s most intelligent and adaptive systems. In truth, the spine is flexible, responsive, and deeply interconnected with breath, movement, and whole-body awareness.
In this 4-hour workshop, we’ll explore:
Functional spinal anatomy — structure, curves, and biomechanics that matter for yoga practice.
Breath–spine interaction — how breathing patterns both influence and are influenced by spinal health.
Whole-body integration — understanding the spine as a dynamic system that shapes posture, movement efficiency, and awareness.
Structural differences — exploring the real variations between bodies in the room, to build a more inclusive, anatomy-informed approach to practice and facilitation.
Common complaints — back pain, stiffness, and other spinal concerns viewed through a yoga-specific lens.
We’ll also examine how spinal health impacts energy regulation, nervous system balance, and sleep quality, expanding the conversation beyond posture into full-body wellness.
This workshop is designed for yoga teachers who want to deepen their knowledge and refine how they support students of all body shapes and abilities, as well as curious practitioners eager to better understand their own spine. You’ll leave with a science-based framework, practical tools, and a fresh perspective on the spine as a responsive, intelligent system—far more than a rigid “column.
Drawing on her background in anatomy labs, where she studied the human form at its most raw and structural, Gillian brings a unique perspective to anatomy education. Having examined the spine beyond textbooks, Gillian excels at translating that knowledge into accessible, movement-based insights that are directly applicable to yoga practice and teaching.
