A Contact Improvisation Intensive with Rick Nodine
In this workshop we will ask questions with our dancing about the quality of softness.
What does it mean to be soft in a CI dance and what does it achieve?
Why did Steve Paxton say "tension masks sensation” ?
Do I know how much muscle tone I use to dance?
When could I use less force or tone?
Do I copy my partners tone or force?
Are there situations in which being soft is wrong?
This workshop will explore these questions through carefully framed improvisational tasks (focused dances) followed by discussion and feedback. Thoughtful dances and embodied conversations will feedback into more conscious dances.
This workshop is for any dancer who is looking for more awareness and enjoyment from Contact Improvisation.
To be physically soft is to blur the clarity of your skin boarder.
When a body meets the skin edge of another soft body it can move, change, reorganise. The skin border of the soft body is not a definite place in space, but is only the beginning of a negotiation. The border of a soft body is always a liminal site which changes depending on how it is addressed.
The softness at the skin boarder is a product of the softness which is present at the centre of the dancers intension, at their core.
