Downriver Caravan Birding Blitz

Join Detroit Bird Alliance expert and eagle-eyed leaders Jim Bull and Bruce Szczechowski for a Downriver birding caravan at birding hotspots along the Detroit River.

The Detroit River between Detroit and Lake Erie is a great wintering place for hundreds of thousands of waterfowl, and the shoreline woods and fields are homes for wintering birds of many types. We’ll start at Dingell Park in Ecorse (we’ll meet at the overlook adjacent to the parking lot). Mud Island which is only a few yards away can host up to 30 roosting wintering Bald Eagles, and waterfowl in the water can be plentiful.

We’ll then head to see more waterfowl in Bishop Park and the municipal golf course in Wyandotte, then on to Elizabeth Park (a Wayne County park) in Trenton where we can see a full compliment of winter songbirds, hawks, eagles, and maybe a Great Horned Owl. We have also had Cackling Geese and other waterfowl at that park. We’ll end our trip at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge Gateway (visitor center site) for more waterfowl on a long pier out to the middle of the Detroit River, and maybe see Snow Buntings and Horned Larks in the adjacent grassland as well.
