This Open House will highlight the life, and the significant impact on Easton, of Anna Coffin Ames (1839–1917) who rose from a poor childhood on Nantucket to become a major benefactor of Easton after marrying Gov. Oliver Ames. After his death, she funded the first Oliver Ames High School, strongly supported music education by providing instruments, uniforms, and teachers, and later helped establish the school gym, boosting athletics—especially basketball. She also supported women’s suffrage and consistently used her wealth to give back to her community, inspired by the generosity she had received earlier in life.
