NEO-ZOMBIE ESTONIAN POST-FOLK!
A pinch of surrealism, modern folklore and talharpa revival! Two elegantly dressed gentlemen with a gloriously deadpan sense of humor: the Estonian duo of Ramo Teder and Marko Veisson play talharpas – traditional bowed lyres, popular in Northern Europe since the early middle ages. The mellow sighs of the talharpa are paired with electronically amplified echoes, knocks, creaks and crackles, while still maintaining the instrument’s natural sound.
The lyrics and melodies are a mixture of musical memories and improvisation, and the inspiration is drawn from Finnish jouhikko repertoire, Sahel blues, chastushkas and other elements from musical traditions around the world — Marko Veisson is an anthropologist who did extensive field work in West Africa. All kinds of random sources of inspiration are similarly important – unexpected excerpts from Polish TV series, old Estonian punk, and sweetbread from Vormsi Island.
Co-presented with our friends at CitySpace. There will be some seating and some standing for this one.
