About the event

Poets Cal Freeman & Dennis Hinrichsen + Open Mic
Join two of Michigan's most gifted poets, Cal Freeman & Dennis Hinrichsen, for a full-throated investigation of life upon this beautiful, albeit difficult planet called Earth. Both writers have exciting new books, available for purchase and signing at the reading. After a social break, attendees who would like to share a poem in the Open Mic are invited to throw their names in the basket at the Gate Table.

Cal Freeman is the author of the books Fight Songs (Eyewear 2017) and Poolside at the Dearborn Inn (R&R Press 2022). His writing has appeared in many journals including Atticus Review, Image, The Poetry Review, Verse Daily, Under a Warm Green Linden, North American Review, Panoply Zine, Oxford American, Berkeley Poetry Review, and Advanced Leisure. He is a recipient of the Devine Poetry Fellowship (judged by Terrance Hayes), winner of Passages North's Neutrino Prize, and a finalist for the River Styx International Poetry Prize. Born and raised in Detroit, he teaches at Oakland University and serves as Writer-In-Residence with InsideOut Literary Arts Detroit. His chapbook of poems, Yelping the Tegmine, came out in 2024, and his hybrid full-length collection, The Weather of Our Names, has just been released by Cornerstone Press.

Dennis Hinrichsen is the author of twelve full-length collections of poetry. Formally adroit and lyrically rich, his poems unerringly map both the zeitgeist and the subjective psyche. His recent books include Dominion + Selected Poems, Flesh-plastique, and schema geometrica, winner of the Wishing Jewel Prize for poetic innovation, and This Is Where I Live I Have Nowhere Else To Go, winner of the Grid Poetry Prize. His other awards include the Field Poetry Prize, the Michael Waters Poetry Prize, the Tampa Poetry Prize, the Akron Poetry Prize, and the Rachel Wetzsteon Chapbook Award. He lives in Michigan, where he served as the first Poet Laureate of the Greater Lansing area.”

The reading will take place in the Copper Chimney Lounge of the University United Methodist Church (UUMC), 1120 South Hagadorn Rd., East Lansing — across the street from MSU & directly north of the Trowbridge Shopping Center.

The event is free of charge & open to the public. Donations to support the series are gratefully accepted.

Free parking is available behind the church.
