Your Host & Featured Poet: Fred Gerhard – Motorman and Poet
There’s nothing else like it: poetry performed on a living piece of history, with sunlight streaming through century-old windows and the gentle rumble of the tracks underscoring every word. Join us for an afternoon where rails and verse move in harmony.
Step aboard a vintage trolley for a one-of-a-kind afternoon where history and poetry travel the same track.
The Shore Line Trolley Museum, home to the nation’s oldest continuously operating trolley line, welcomes you to a Poetry Slam on the Rails. As the trolley glides along its scenic route, the rhythm of the rails will set the perfect backdrop for an afternoon of spoken word and community connection.
Your guide for the ride is Fred Gerhard, both a motorman at the museum and an accomplished poet. Gerhard’s writing blends the everyday with the lyrical, offering glimpses of quiet beauty, shifting landscapes, and the fleeting moments that make life vivid. His readings, paired with the movement of the trolley, transform the ride into a traveling stage for reflection and creativity.
What to Expect:
A rolling poetry slam aboard a historic trolley.
Featured readings by Fred Gerhard.
Open-mic opportunities for guests to share their own work.
A welcoming atmosphere where history, community, and art come together.
