About the event

Caring for a Troubled World: Practicing Compassion Without Burning Out with Juliana Sloane
Wednesdays, November 5, 12 and 19 from 5:30-7:15 p.m.
IN PERSON ONLY

Compassion can help us meet the suffering of the world with a warm and resilient heart. It spurs us to help, to act, and ultimately, to make the world a better place. It fuels connection and care. But sometimes, we struggle with it. At times, what we consider to be ‘compassion’ can feel overwhelming or painful. The Buddhist practice of karuna (the Pali word for compassion) helps us understand that we can feel deep compassion and wellbeing all at once.

In this three-week course we’ll explore how to meet suffering without losing our center and dive deeper into karuna as a liberating but at times misunderstood quality of heart.

Together, we will explore the ways that compassion practice can nourish and inspire our hearts and allow us to feel more whole and connected. We’ll learn to cultivate the inner conditions that allow compassion to flow with ease: safety and stability, mindful awareness, and the capacity to care without falling into empathic distress.

Each session will include formal meditation practice, Dharma reflections and relational mindfulness exercises to deepen your compassion practice in a way that nourishes rather than drains. This course is for anyone who longs to meet the suffering in our world without collapsing and is ready to ground their practice in a sense of deeper resilience and empowerment. It is suitable for new and experienced meditators alike.
