Medieval Masterpieces: The Dunedin Books of Hours
A talk by Professor Simone Celine Marshall
Dunedin is home to a unique collection of medieval Books of Hours, dating from the 13th to the 16th centuries, and housed in the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, the Dunedin Public Library, and at the University of Otago Libraries. This collection, some complete books and some now only fragments, offers us a glimpse into a world of personal reading for contemplation.
Revealing the highest-quality artistry, Professor Simone Marshall sheds light on these books which were once owned by wealthy individuals concerned for their spiritual wellbeing. Illuminated with gold and painted with vibrant colours, these books are a window on a time long past.
Simone Celine Marshall is Professor of English and Head of the School of Arts at the University of Otago. Her research includes medieval poetry and the works of Geoffrey Chaucer, as well as hands-on research into medieval calligraphy, manuscript making, and bookbinding.
