Featured Artists Lorna Allan and Brenda Nyhof appearing 8-14 December in the Joan Hardey Gallery.
An introduction to Lorna Allan’s artwork:
Lorna’s love of art was initially influenced by the largely untouched area of Papatowai in the Catlins where her family had a small crib. Time there was spent exploring the coastline, rivers and bush of that beautiful area. Her love of nature that developed there shows in her work today. Through her work she hopes to share the peace, beauty and tranquility of the natural world with her viewers and clients.
Lorna has a special interest in working with farmers, creating a selection of works of their properties. These works are handed down through the generations so that the family’s history and connection with the land is never lost and is preserved for always.
Lorna works in acrylic and on canvas. Lorna has always enjoyed the works of the Old Masters and those of particular interest to her are Albert Bierstdat and Thomas Moran.
Brenda Nyhof introduces her artwork:
“I am a Dunedin artist working across several mediums. My life has been an ongoing process of learning, playing with materials and experimenting.
I have worked with painting, drawing and paper mâché over the years. The handmade aspect and space for imagination is important for me, as is the joy in making art. I rarely plan a work or work with detailed sketches, rather I begin from a rough idea, allowing the work to speak to me as I work.
My focus now is making figurines, masks and wall hung sculptures from polymer and air-dry clays. These are usually made over wire frames and adorned with recycled jewellery, possum fur and fabric
My work reflects my love of nature, twisted vines and trees, mosses, animals, birds, insects and an interest in stories, mythology and fantasy.”
