Kai Hea Te Tuna? – drop-in printmaking workshops led by artist Emma Kitson.
Create a vibrant artwork inspired by the many creatures (such as tuna, kanakana and pātiki!) who live in the awa across Te Waipounamu. This fun printing method uses foam stamps and is friendly for the whole family. Create your own artwork to take home, and help fill a big paper awa.
Emma Kitson (Kāi Tahu, Kāti Māmoe, Waitaha) is an artist, designer, educator and curator. She has a passion for hands on education and shares her love of accessible printmaking techniques through workshops which cater to a wide range of ages. Her whakapapa traces its roots to the small island of Whenua Hou west of Rakiura (Stewart Island). Emma graduated from the Dunedin School of Art, and then worked at many museums and art galleries in New Zealand and Australia. Becoming a mother in 2012 was a catalyst for her to return to making art; she found printmaking to be the most accessible option. Joining Paemanu Ngāi Tahu Contemporary Visual Arts collective in 2014, she has contributed to their major exhibitions at CoCA, Dunedin Public Art Gallery and the Asia Pacific Triennale 11. She is also a member of Toi Whakaata - Māori Print Collective.
This activity is suitable for all ages who are comfortable using scissors, younger children are welcome to join in with assistance. Children must be accompanied by a guardian at all times. All materials provided. The event is in support of the exhibition Unutai e! Unutai e!
