HISTORY
Founded shortly after the Norman Conquest (circa 1070) by Ansculf de Picquigny, Dudley began as a motte-and-bailey castle, later rebuilt in stone during the 12th century .
The Norman stone castle was razed by Henry II following a rebellion and rebuilt in the mid‑13th century by the de Somerys, completing much of what still stands today—including the keep and gatehouse .
The Sharrington Range, an early Renaissance-style residential wing, was constructed from around 1540 under John Dudley, representing architectural innovation in the Midlands .
During the English Civil War, it was held by Royalists but eventually besieged and slighted by Parliamentarians in 1646 to prevent further military use .
A catastrophic fire in 1750 destroyed the remaining domestic buildings, leaving the castle a picturesque ruin
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY
Dudley Castle is said to be haunted by several spirits, the most famous being the Grey Lady, believed to be the ghost of Dorothy Beaumont. She died shortly after childbirth in the 17th century and was denied her final wishes to be buried beside her daughter and for her husband to attend her funeral—something many believe ties her restless spirit to the castle.
Other paranormal activity reported includes:
Apparitions seen near the chapel undercroft and keep
Disembodied voices, footsteps, and sudden cold spots
Shadowy figures moving through the Sharington Range and old stables
Poltergeist activity, such as doors slamming and stones being thrown in empty rooms
It’s a popular site for ghost hunts due to the frequency and variety of reported phenomena
