Guitar Prasanna is one of the world’s most innovative guitarists and composers today. The New York Times calls his music “cosmopolitan harmonic language”, Chicago Reader calls his playing “inhumanly precise fretwork”, CMJ music magazine says “Prasanna’s guitar playing seems to exceed the capacity of the instrument”, and Allaboutjazz.com says “Prasanna plays guitar like nobody on the planet”.
Prasanna pioneered the art of Carnatic music on the guitar and is the world’s best-known Carnatic guitarist today. He has performed with some of the top Indian classical musicians like Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Umayalpuram Sivaraman, Vikku Vinayakram, and Dr. L. Subramaniam. Prasanna’s virtuosity and expertise in playing Jazz, Rock, and Blues have led him to perform with Rock stars such as Jordan Rudess, Alex Skolnick, and Dweezil Zappa and Jazz luminaries such as Joe Lovano, Esperanza Spalding, and Larry Coryell. Prasanna is the first Indian composer to score the music for an Oscar-winning Documentary film - Megan Mylan’s “Smile Pinki” which won an Oscar in 2009. Featured among the “Top 50 creative Indians” by Open Magazine and among the “100 greatest Indian Classical musicians” by Spinditty magazine, Prasanna was awarded the “Lifetime Achievement Award in Carnatic music” from H.H. Jayendra Saraswathi. A graduate of two of the most prestigious colleges in the world-Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and Berklee College of Music- Prasanna was recently recognized by both his alma mater - the Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT Madras and a prominent solo feature by Berklee College of Music at the A.R. Rahman Honorary Doctorate Event at Boston Symphony Hall.
Prasanna has scored the music for the Indian National Award Tamil blockbuster Vazhakku Inn 18/9. Prasanna's guitar work can be heard on some of the biggest hit songs in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi films of Ilaiyaraaja, A.R. Rahman, Lakshmikant Pyarelal, Harris Jayaraj, Yuvan Shankar Raja, Anirudh Ravichander, Mani Sharma, and others. Prasanna’s collaborations with A.R. Rahman include such hit songs as “July Matham Vandal”, “Kannodu Kaanbadellam”, “Ye Jo De hai tera”, “Lagaan- Once upon a time”, “Desi thoughts”, MTV Coke Studio project, and numerous others.
After a string of acclaimed concerts all over the US, Canada, India, Netherlands, UK, Ireland, and Germany, Prasanna’s “One man, One guitar, Many worlds” tour comes to Dubai with two concerts - "Endaro Mahanubhavulu" - A concert of Carnatic music featuring songs by Tyagaraja, Dikshitar, and Syama Sastri and "Yeh Shaam Mastani" - A concert of songs by Ilaiyaraaja, R.D. Burman, and A.R.Rahman.
