Stepping Out is a comedic play by Richard Harris that premiered in 1984. Set in a modest church hall, it follows a group of women—and one man—who attend a weekly tap-dance class. Initially awkward and self-conscious, they gradually form bonds and gain confidence, culminating in a charity performance where their transformation into a cohesive dance troupe is both heartwarming and humorous.
Character Breakdown:
Mavis – An ex-professional dancer who leads the class with patience and encouragement.
Sylvia – A cheerful, overweight woman who brings humor and warmth to the group.
Andy – A shy, self-effacing woman with little confidence, often overshadowed by her domineering husband.
Vera – A snobbish yet well-meaning woman who often clashes with others due to her outspoken nature.
Dorothy – A timid, anxious woman who works in social security, often repeating others' words and struggling with coordination.
Maxine – An attractive, sharp, and shrewd woman who is confident in her dancing abilities.
Lynne – A young, eager-to-please student nurse with a natural grace and a tendency to bite her nails when nervous.
Rose – A lively woman who attends the class for enjoyment, adding a carefree spirit to the group.(this role is written to be played by someone who is not White British, we are being flexible but looking for a person of colour or somebody European.)
Geoffrey – The lone male in the class, often seen as a 'doormat' but adds a unique dynamic to the group.
Mrs. Fraser – The grumpy, sarcastic pianist who provides musical accompaniment with a touch of cynicism
