As a clergy wife Grace has spent a lifetime on best behaviour. Now, following the death of her husband Bardolph, she is enjoying the new-found freedom of being able to do and say exactly as she pleases.
But the return of her eccentric missionary sister, Ruth, together with some disturbing revelations forces Grace to confront the truth of her marriage.
Set in a classic English vicarage garden complete with a grass-banked stream and willow, the play is filled with sharp-edged comedy and probing wit. character breakdown
Grace (50s–60s) A recently widowed vicar’s wife, sharp-tongued, witty, and strong-willed. Grace has spent her life being the dutiful and proper vicar’s wife but now, with her husband gone, her real, more rebellious self begins to surface. She’s fiery, intelligent, with a dry sense of humour, but also deeply hurt and betrayed by secrets that come to light.
Ruth (50s–60s) Grace’s younger sister, a missionary who has returned from Africa. Ruth is gentler and more introspective than Grace but carries her own heavy emotional burdens. She has a complicated, strained relationship with Grace, full of old resentments, guilt, and love. Ruth is warm, conflicted, and sincere.
Bardolph (50s–60s) Grace’s late husband, seen in memory and flashback. Bardolph was the local vicar, charming and respected by his parish. However, it’s revealed he wasn’t the ideal husband Grace believed him to be. He appears affable, kind, even humorous — but with deeper, more troubling layers.
Jo (Late 20s–early 30s) Grace and Bardolph’s daughter. Jo is intelligent, slightly bohemian, and less concerned with propriety than her parents. She represents a younger, more modern generation. Jo seeks a sense of independence but struggles with the complicated family dynamics and her own relationship with her late father.
Sarah (30s–40s) The new vicar who has taken Bardolph’s place. Sarah is professional, progressive, and trying to be diplomatic as she navigates a tricky relationship with Grace. She embodies the church's evolving attitudes and contrasts sharply with Grace’s more traditional views.
