Looking for Vikings!
Next Sunday (12th October) Dorchester Community Plays Association (DCPA) are remembering their second community play, Under the God, performed in 1989. Do you know anyone who was in the original cast?
The play told “the story of the ordinary people of Fordington, a poor Saxon community ruled by a weak king with the terrifying Vikings out at sea, as well as peaceful Danish traders, the old God warring in their souls with the new God of the Christian faith” (Fanny Charles reviewing Under the God in the BVG - “engrossing and magical”). In 1989 40 Danes from Holbaek came to take part in the play, leading to the twinning of the 2 towns and the formation of the Holbaek Society.
Anyone is welcome to come along and take a part in the play reading from 2pm in the Community Space in the Dorset Museum & Art Gallery. From 10.30am we will be displaying the research that led up to this play, photographs of the performances (it was staged in Herrison Hall, Charlton Down), newspaper cuttings etc.

Since the play was performed, the Viking burial has been discovered up on the Ridgeway. If anyone knows anyone connected to this discovery or the subsequent research, it would be great to feature this during the day next Sunday in the museum community space. Please put them in touch!
