It's now been about a month since Hurricane Melissa tore through Jamaica and the wider Caribbean, leaving long-lasting effects on families, homes, and entire communities. For many of us in JAM Iowa, this devastation feels deeply personal. We have family in Jamaica. We have roots in Jamaica. We carry Jamaica with us every day.
In the weeks since the hurricane international and national response has been focused on urgent needs - food, clothing, temporary shelter, emergency supplies. Those first waves of relief have been crucial. Now, JAM Iowa has been asking ourselves:
“What comes next?”
As a community group made up of parents, educators, students and Jamaicans living here in Iowa we found a shared answer: we are committed to supporting edcuation.
This led us to connect with two schools in Westmoreland and St. Elizabeth:
📘 Godfrey Stewart High School
📗 The Thomas Manning Building
Both schools suffered significant damage during Hurricane Melissa. The repairs needed go beyond patching walls they require structural restoration, preservation of historic buildings, and creating a safe, secure learning environment so students can return to school without fear or disruption.
To support these efforts, we are hosting:
