St. Francis of Assisi, whose feast day is this coming Saturday (10/4), offered the church a radically different approach to living a life dedicated to God, in which absolute poverty and service were the core of his teachings. His love and reverence for all creation, especially nature’s flora and fauna, remain touchstones for today’s ecological mindedness. Jacqueline Wollan Gibbons’s final reflection (of which there were many) from October 2010 explores the concept of sainthood and what that can mean to a Unitarian Universalist. And, appropriately, we also celebrate our beloved pets with a ritual that meant so much to Jackie, the Blessing of the Animals.
