About the event

porous sonorous: Unicorn & Flexibility / Gunduz+Prickett / Reeder+Coelho / Firelife Trio
Unicorn and Flexibility is the Franco-Belgian brutal jazz trio of Arnaud Velliquet, Cédric Hamelin, and Samuel Rolfian, bringing their universe, where minimalist, motionless landscapes collide with the most violent sonic hurricanes, to a handful of US dates on a small tour. Austin-based Istanbulite composer, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist Esin Gunduz teams up with Dallas guitar legend Gregg Prickett for the second time as a duo, their first time performing in Denton. Portuguese vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Júlia Coelho joins Denton-based composer Kory Reeder for medieval songs and drones, possibly tied to Reeder’s Codex Praxis. Houston saxophonist Danny Kamins is back in full form, and we are honored to host his first North Texas performance alongside Aaron and Stefan Gonzalez as the Firelife trio.

UNICORN AND FLEXIBILITY (Paris, France / Brussels, Belgium)
A drums, cello, and saxophone “brutal jazz” trio formed in 2012, united by a vision of free jazz, improvisation, and temporal elasticity. Their music draws on free jazz, rock, noise, contemporary, and world traditions to explore extreme dynamics with singular intensity. With UNICORN AND FLEXIBILITY, they continue the path that has earned recognition across Europe, their raw energy now shaped by rhythmic disruption. Slow builds collide with abrupt shifts in timing, tempo, and texture, producing a striking temporal experience.

Beyond the trio, Arnaud Velliquet, Cédric Hamelin, and Samuel Rolfian, have collaborated with Joëlle Léandre, Joachim Kühn, Tony Malaby, Michel Portal, Louis Sclavis, Marc Ducret, Andrea Parkins, Kit Downes, Luis Lopes, Alexandra Grimal, Benjamin Duboc, Marcelo dos Reis, Ramon Lopez, Majid Bekkas, Mamady Keita, and Purbayan Chatterjee, among many others.

ESIN GUNDUZ + GREGG PRICKETT (Istanbul > Austin / Dallas)
Originally from Istanbul, composer, vocal performer, and improviser Esin Gunduz treats timbre as visceral experience, working across acoustic, electroacoustic, and installation contexts, with performances from Reykjavík and Berlin to NYC and Montréal. Her projects include En-he-du-an-na-me-en (2020), her duo Senso di Voce with oboist Megan Kyle (album Tierceron, Other Minds 2023, with Henry Birdsey), and …through itself…, a Chamber Music America commission to be released on Sonic Transmissions Records in 2025

Gregg Prickett moves fluidly through rock, jazz, country, metal, and experimental sound. For over 27 years he has led Monks of Saturnalia, and has performed with Unconscious Collective, Ronald Shannon Jackson’s Decoding Society, and the exploratory Trio Du Sang. He also works in the duo Saw Toothed Dolls, as solo project Habu Habu, and has been a long-time collaborator with the independent theatre Ochre House since 2017.

KORY REEDER + JÚLIA COELHO (Denton / Portugal)
Portuguese soprano Júlia Coelho, now based in Denton, performs across early, contemporary, and traditional repertoires, spanning early music, new music, jazz standards, Brazilian bossa nova, Portuguese fado, and Sephardi song. She has sung in operas and chamber concerts in Europe and the US, and as a musicologist she has presented at conferences in both regions on subjects including early opera, 16th–18th century European and Brazilian music, music and disability, politics, and rhetoric. Alongside performance, she teaches music history at the University of North Texas at Frisco.

Kory Reeder is a Nebraska-born composer and performer based in Denton, Texas, whose introspective and atmospheric music—shaped by visual arts and political theory—explores objectivity, immediacy, and the social implications of musical interaction. His work, spanning symphonic pieces, text scores, and computer-assisted improvisation, has been performed internationally and released on Edition Wandelweiser, Petrichor, Impulsive Habitat, Another Timbre, Full Spectrum Records, and his own Sawyer Editions and Sawyer Spaces.
