About this Event

Evaluation Determination Teams and Least Restrictive Environments

This training, led by Joanna Cosbey, is designed for professionals involved in Evaluation Determination Teams (EDTs) and the placement process to ensure a student's educational environment is the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the legal and practical requirements for making defensible and student-centered decisions.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Understanding the LRE Mandate: A deep dive into the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the federal and state requirements for LRE.
  • The Role of the Evaluation Determination Team: Clarification of the EDT's responsibilities, including the review of evaluation data, determination of eligibility for special education services, and the crucial link between evaluation findings and LRE considerations.
  • The Continuum of Placements: Exploration of the various educational settings available, from general education with supplementary aids and services to more restrictive environments, and how to appropriately navigate this continuum.
  • Making a Defensible Placement Decision: Practical strategies for documenting the decision-making process, including justifying why a student cannot be educated in a less restrictive environment and detailing the supplementary aids and services considered.
  • Case Studies and Practical Scenarios: Hands-on activities and group discussions to apply concepts to real-world situations, enhancing the ability to make collaborative and legally sound LRE determinations.
  • Best Practices for Team Collaboration: Techniques for effective communication and consensus-building among EDT members, including parents, teachers, and related service providers, to ensure a holistic and student-focused approach.

This training is ideal for special education administrators, case managers, school psychologists, teachers, and other professionals who serve on Evaluation Determination Teams. Participants will leave with the knowledge and tools necessary to ensure that every student's placement decision is individualized, legally compliant, and supports their academic and social growth in the Least Restrictive Environment.
