Interior worlds: A unique story through color, shapes, and spaces.
Carolina Velandia Hernández is a self-taught, multidisciplinary artist whose practice centers on themes of resilience, identity, and collective healing. Born and raised in Colombia and Argentina now residing in DeKalb, Illinois. She has been creating art since the age of eight. Though she pursued a professional career in law and public policy, art remained as a sanctuary—a private act of resistance and self-preservation.
Carolina’s work utilizes mixed media, including pyrography, charcoal, ink, acrylic and oil painting, often on reclaimed wood and paper or recyclable materials. She draws inspiration from natural forms, cultural symbols, and personal experiences to create pieces that explore the complexities of human emotion, politics, power struggles, and social dynamics. During the political unrest surrounding the 2020 and 2025 U.S. presidential elections, she created and displayed several works in Illinois like Fear: 2020 and 2025 at protests to confront systemic racism and advocate for marginalized communities, specially focus on breaking stereotypes of Latin(x) persons. Carolina believes that art has the power to foster dialogue, build community, and drive social change.
