This Thursday’s class is about letting go and finishing something you didn’t think you could.
I’ve shared a few images so you can see a range of artistic approaches to emotion, colour and form. What they all have in common is that they began with experimentation and permission rather than certainty.
We’ll begin the evening with quick life drawing to loosen up and get out of our heads. I’ll be the clothed model for these short poses and we’ll work fast with charcoal so nobody gets stuck worrying about getting things right.
We’ll then move into a shared drawing exercise at the easel. Each person responds to what the previous person has drawn. This is one of the most effective ways to build confidence and learn to really look, because the drawing becomes about attention and response rather than ownership.
The main focus of the session will be working with emotion as subject. We’ll talk briefly about choosing a single feeling and a specific remembered moment, then translate that into colour, pressure, rhythm and space rather than illustration.
The final piece will be a pastel abstract and the aim is to finish it by the end of the class. This part of the session is slow, focused and absorbing. I’ll spend time with each person individually, helping you clarify what you’re trying to express and how to push the work forward.
Nothing here is about talent or experience. It’s about curiosity, trust and staying with the process long enough for something real to appear.
