For the past 2 years, I have hosted what I call a “Free Table”. My family puts all donation items in a basket by the door and when it’s full, we set up a table in our yard. I add a little sign that says “Free!”, take pictures, and post in our community groups.
Several neighbors have stopped to tell me how much they love our free table. It’s been a great source of joy and connection for us. It really is a win-win. I save on gas money by not hauling my stuff to Goodwill, and my community benefits from my donated items without having to pay for them at Goodwill. (Weird. Huh?)
I have decided to expand on my Free Table project. The concept is simple:
• Set a date and create a Facebook event
• Set up our Free Table
• Accept donations from others*
• Provide FREE cotton candy
• Provide activities like chalk or bubbles
• Watch kids play basketball or at the nearby park
• Chat with neighbors and make friends
Everyone is invited! This event is intended to create community. I truly believe our village could benefit from gatherings where there is no expectation of spending money, but rather, the focus is on conversation and helping others. If you think that sounds nice, please come to my event.
*If YOU have donation items, you are encouraged to bring them. Sometimes people will donate and sometimes they won’t. It’s no big deal one way or the other. The focus is community, so come for some cotton candy and conversation.
