Location: The Boldman House Museum
Event Time: October 4th, 1PM
Step into the past and learn the secrets of preserving the harvest at this special Living History performance and workshop held in conjunction with Columbia County’s 150th Sesquicentennial Celebration!
A local historical reenactor will take on the character of Mr. Stine, a real 19th-century regional general merchant, known for his practical skills and resourcefulness. Dressed in period attire and full of stories from the late 1800s, Mr. Stine will demonstrate how he prepares and ferments fresh vegetables from his garden for use through the winter—just as families would have done in the pioneer era.
This hands-on presentation will include:
Old-fashioned fermented sauerkraut (perfectly timed for fall)
Pickling and fermentation techniques for other garden vegetables
Tips for safe storage and use through the seasons
Visitors will get a chance to see, smell, and sample history in action as we explore how food preservation was essential to daily life in early Columbia County.
Bring your curiosity, your love of local history, and your appetite for learning. This event is free and open to the public. Donations to support the work of the Dayton Historical Depot Society and the Boldman House Museum are always appreciated.
Let’s preserve the harvest—and our history—together!
