Dear Friends of Poetry,
Our July 17 Poetry Night will feature poets and authors Dane Cervine and Adela Najarro. We meet at 7 PM inside the air-conditioned John Natsoulas Gallery, and we hope you can join us!
Our first reader of the evening will be Adela Najarro.
Adela Najarro is the author of five poetry collections, including Variations in Blue, selected for publication in 2025 through the Letras Latinas/Red Hen Collaborative. Her other works include Split Geography, Twice Told Over, My Childrens, and Volcanic Interruptions, a chapbook featuring artwork by Janet Trenchard.
She holds a doctorate in literature and creative writing from Western Michigan University, as well as an M.F.A. from Vermont College, and is widely published in numerous anthologies and literary magazines, including Latino Poetry: The Library of America Anthology, Latino Poetics, The Wandering Song: Central American Writing in the United States, and other anthologies. Her work has also been featured in dozens of journals, including Poetry Magazine. She currently resides in Santa Cruz, California.
Our second reader on July 17 will be Dane Cervine.
Dane Cervine is a Santa Cruz-based poet who has split his time between working in mental health and publishing award-winning books of poetry. Cervine’s recent books of poetry include Nine Volt Nirvana (Word Poetry Press), DEEP TRAVEL – At Home in the [Burning] World (Saddle Road Press), The World Is God’s Language (Sixteen Rivers Press), Earth Is a Fickle Dancer (Main Street Rag), and The Gateless Gate – Polishing the Moon Sword (Saddle Road Press). Cervine’s poems have won awards from Adrienne Rich, Tony Hoagland, the Atlanta Review, and Caesura, and they have been nominated for multiple Pushcarts. His work appears in The SUN, the Hudson Review, TriQuarterly, Poetry Flash, Catamaran, Miramar, Rattle, Sycamore Review, and Pedestal Magazine, among others. The open mic starts at 8. Performers will be asked to limit their sharings to two items or four minutes whichever is shorter. The open mic list is typically full by 6:45. People who show up early to help set up chairs will always earn a spot on the open mic list.
