PROGRAM
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 29TH
10am - 12pm Bureau of Meteorology 2025/6 Seasonal Forecast & Australian Red Cross EmergencyRedi Session
The Australian Red Cross will cover
What is preparedness?
Why it is important to be prepared for emergencies
Preparing your mind for emergencies
How to assess your own risks and capacities
How to prepare your household for an emergency
Guidance on completing your own emergency RediPlan
Other ways you can take action to prepare yourself, your household and your community
The BoM will present a seasonal outlook on prevailing conditions in coming months and give some information on the weather hazards we can experience over the season, as well as the Bureau products and services that can help with preparedness and response.
12pm - 2pm Thinking geography - Mapping out the features of our city to prepare for disaster with Billee McGinley
With over 20 years’ experience using spatial geovisualisation tools and geodata across many contexts—including emergency response—Billee will introduce a range of practical mapping tools that can help us plan for and communicate risk in a changing climate.
This is an interactive session, shaped by what participants are curious about. We’ll think together about what’s useful to communicate on a map to prepare us for the challenges of climate driven natural disasters—and how mapping can help us stay safer and more connected when things go wrong.
2pm - 4pm Circular economy - What is it and how can we use it in a disaster context? with Nick O'Loughlin
Uncontaminated waste gives you access to ENERGY/POWER. Humans waste a lot. There is a lot of power available. Simply, waste energy benefits us when we can separate our waste streams - at the point of disposal - and repurpose. Combine this with dishwashing reusables to AVOID waste and we can transition away from single-use plastic. Nightcliff Markets is the epicentre. With world's best practice and Australian Standards let Nick from WeBU explain his approach to our changing environment. Power to the people.
SUNDAY NOVEMBER 30TH
11am - 1pm Dinner from the Debris- edible survival tips for a Cyclone with Emma Lupin
Forget the baked beans — it’s time to get creative!
Join us for an information and interactive session on turning disaster into delicious and debris into dinner. We’ll explore inventive ways to stay nourished (and even inspired) during and after a cyclone, including:
• Building food-sharing networks before disaster strikes
• Packing an inspired (and edible!) cyclone kit
• Growing living food that won’t blow away
• Foraging and cooking with “windfall” produce
• Fridge-diving, flavour-hunting, and a hint of cane toad cookery
Bring along one or two edible items from your own cyclone kit — and why they make the cut. Let’s turn disaster into delicious, and survival into an art form.
1pm - 3pm Disaster and pets - how to live through heat and evacuate with pets in disaster with Anna Sri
Do you have a plan for your pet or animals in extreme weather events? Develop a plan and receive guidance from a veterinarian to care for your animals. We will focus on storms, cyclones, heat and bushfires. We will also cover tips and things to consider in the weeks and months before extreme weather or disaster hits.
3pm - 4.30pm National Climate Risk Assessment - what does the report mean for Darwin's future? With Bree Ahrens
The Australian Government’s Climate Risk Assessment is the most detailed resource to date about how climate change will impact our lives. In equal parts a dire warning and an invitation for action, we’ll consider what it means for us in the NT and what we can do about it.

Creating Climate Refuge is a Darwin Community Arts’ program funded through the City of Darwin Environment Grant program. It aims to grow the amount of individuals and networks actively informed and able to respond during natural disaster/climate catastrophe events. Darwin Community Art mission statement is No art on a dead planet. This program is the start of us working within the creative recovery space to provide what we can to boost local disaster resilience.
Every person who plans is one less person panicking in crisis! And we are most resilient when we plan together.
