About the event

Book Signing & Meet the Authors: Lisa Brideau & Rose Sutherland

BOOK FANS! Lisa Brideau (Adrift, Sourcebooks) and Rose Sutherland (A Sweet Sting of Salt, Random House) – two Nova Scotia authors – will be available for casual conversation and book signings at Indigo Dartmouth on Oct 11 from 1-3pm.

A Sweet Sting Of Salt & Adrift – on the surface they’re very different types of speculative fiction one set in the past and one in the future on the two opposite coasts of Canada—but both are deeply connected to the sea the weather and its rhythms and caprices. In both the main character is a brilliant woman trying to unravel a net of secrets before she’s trapped in it…and both authors are originally from Nova Scotia!

Drop in to say hi and have a casual chat about the books, writing, traditional publishing, why books set by the ocean are always the best, pick up a book or two, and have them signed!

Adrift - winner of the 2024 Evergreen Award and nominated for best debut by Crime Writers of Canada and Strand Critics Awards.

In a world flirting with climate catastrophe, a woman wakes up alone on a sailboat somewhere in the remote Pacific Northwest. She has no memory of who she is or of how she got there. She just has a short note, which ends with the warning: Don’t look back. Should she heed the advice and move forward into a new life, or try to reclaim the person she once was? Lisa Brideau’s near-future novel Adrift (Sourcebooks Landmark) is at once a taut mystery, a character-driven odyssey, and an unsettlingly realistic picture of what our future could be. A former aerospace engineer, Brideau now works as a sustainability specialist on issues of climate change policy and equity. Originally from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, she now lives in Vancouver, B.C.

A Sweet Sting of Salt - shortlisted for the 2025 Kobo Emerging Writer Prize.

Once a young woman uncovers a dark secret about her neighbor and his mysterious new wife, she’ll have to fight to keep herself—and the woman she loves—safe in this stunning queer reimagining of the classic folktale The Selkie Wife.

When a sharp cry wakes Jean in the middle of the night during a terrible tempest, she’s convinced it must have been a dream. But when the cry comes again, Jean ventures outside and is shocked by what she discovers—a young woman in labor, already drenched to the bone in the freezing cold and barely able to speak a word of English.

Although Jean is the only midwife in the village and for miles around, she’s at a loss as to who this woman is or where she’s from; Jean can only assume she must be the new wife of the neighbor up the road, Tobias. And when Tobias does indeed arrive at her cabin in search of his wife, Muirin, Jean’s questions continue to grow. Why has he kept his wife’s pregnancy a secret? And why does Muirin’s open demeanor change completely the moment she’s in his presence?
