Join us for a dinner and a discussion based on the insights and recommendations from Jonathan Haidt's book "The Anxious Generation." NO PRE-READING IS REQUIRED, and we will strive to have a judgement-free discussion, knowing that every family will make different choices for what they feel is right for their children.
We will have a Bring Your Own Supper (BYOS) and there will be childcare on the playground.
Many of our children and teens have grown up with smart phones, tablets, and the apps on them. While there are positive aspects to their unprecedented access to information and entertainment, there is a dark side when it comes to social and emotional health. These devices and platforms can increase our adolescents' anxiety, depression and social isolation, and can make them vulnerable to online harm. Most of know this, but feel powerless to break the patterns we find ourselves in.
In his book the "Anxious Generation", Jonathan Haidt shares insights about why this has happened, and offers recommendations for how to help our children and teens return to a healthier "play-based" childhood. Haidt believes this is only possible in community, so we will talk about how we can work together as parents, grandparents, and a church family.
