About the event

A Day for Dillon - Dedicate Your Distance to Ending Duchenne
Join us as we walk a mile in remembrance of Dillon Dodson - a brave DMD warrior - who left this world far too soon on March 3, 2025.

We will gather at Burr Performing Arts Park at 1pm on Saturday, September 6 and don't forget to WEAR RED - the internationally recognized color for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

We will pause at .24 mile in honor of Dillon's 24 years and at .97 mile we will complete our walk in community in recognition of World Duchenne Awareness Day - which is observed each your on 9/7.

September 7th each year is a day dedicated to raising awareness about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD).

• What is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)?
DMD is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness due to the alterations of a protein called dystrophin that helps keep muscle cells intact.

The DMD gene responsible for creating dystrophin which is important in building new muscle has 79 exons. This is why World Duchenne Awareness day is recognized on the 7th day of the 9th month of each year.

DMD is an X-linked recessive disorder, primarily affecting males. This means that the gene responsible for DMD is located on the X chromosome, and males, having only one X chromosome, are more susceptible to the disease when they inherit a mutated copy.

When a person with a typical DMD gene makeup works out or exercises their muscles, they break down muscle and their body rebuilds it – often stronger than before. When individuals with Duchenne use their muscles and they break down, they do not rebuild.

This progressive muscle damage eventually leads to larger complications such as decreased heart function, cardiomyopathy, weak diaphragm, loss of muscle mass, inflammation, and fibrosis. There is currently no cure for Duchenne and there is no way to reverse muscle wasting.

Awareness is the first step to a cure!

With awareness comes information and with information comes understanding. Once the need is understood, people take action. This leads to funding, research, and the development of new treatment options...and one day...a cure!

Join us as we take the first step together!
