About this Event

Empire of Faith: Magic Lanterns and Missionaries in Colonial India

In this talk, Dr. Rachel Ball-Phillips will discuss the relationship between visual culture, religion and empire. Join us on a journey through the Bodleian Library (Oxford) archives as we piece together the story of missionaries in early 20thcentury India through magic lantern slides, letters, and other historical documents. We’ll explore how empire and religion have shaped history, and how a historical approach can make us more informed citizens of the world.
