About the event

CCFS Science Pub: EARTH
Join us for the 3rd event in our CCFS Science Pub (lic) ELEMENTS Series.

We've explored FIRE and WATER....

Now it's time to dig in deep for EARTH.

Pieter Romer - Pieter is from the Nisga’a wolf clan or Laxi’buu in Gingolx, BC and descends from Frisian seafarers in Northern Holland in Amland. He is a multi award winning documentary producer / director / writer who works as a liaison between coastal Indigenous communities and Ocean Networks Canada science & technology teams, navigating complexities in the interplay among scientific objectives, environmental policy and issues of cultural significance while providing coastal Indigenous communities with critical real-time data to make informed decisions about their local ocean environment for long-term resilience.

Alison Bird - Alison has been working as an Earthquake Seismologist with Natural Resources Canada since 2000. For 20 years, she analyzed and researched western Canada's earthquakes, and visited Haida Gwaii as part of a response team after the 2012 magnitude 7.8 earthquake. Alison was also part of a team developing a comprehensive risk assessment for Canada. In 2020, she joined the Earthquake Early Warning project as Liaison & Outreach Officer, helping to establish an EEW system for Canada.

Roger MacLeod - Explores the impacts of the 1946 earthquake including the tsunami on Comox Lake and what we know might have caused it (a massive large underwater landslide) and how studying these landslides helps us understand prehistoric earthquakes in the area and across Vancouver Island.

Ginny McLane - a graduate student in volcanology at the University of British Columbia. She is also a member of the Volcano Risk Reduction in Canada program at the Geological Survey of Canada. Her studies mesh historical mapping with modern research and are unveiling precise eruptive volumes of volcanoes in the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt – our “local” volcanic system, for the first time. Born and raised on Vancouver Island and now local to Cumberland, she regularly enjoys trail running and hiking, time at the lake with her family, and coaching equestrian clients in the Comox Valley.

And more!

Join visiting and local subject matter experts, storytellers and knowledge holders as we explore seismology, geomorphology, historic earthquakes and landslides on Vancouver Island and how we build community and household resilience in the face of the BIG ONE. Will there be props? yes! Will there be earthquake improv? Quite possibly! This event is the day after the BC Wide Great Shake Out and presented with support from CVRD Emergency Management.

$25 general admission. $20 for active members and donors.
