🐾 A Walk Through Time
Set in the charming village of Pyrford, Surrey, this walk isn’t just scenic—it’s steeped in history. Pyrford’s name comes from the Saxon Pyrianforde, meaning “the ford by the pear tree”. The village boasts ancient roots, with evidence of Roman occupation and a prehistoric standing stone still visible today. The 12th-century St. Nicholas Church, a rare example of a complete Norman church, stands as a testament to Pyrford’s enduring heritage.
The walk follows the River Wey, one of the oldest navigable rivers in England. Transformed into a trade route in the 17th century by visionary landowner Sir Richard Weston, the River Wey Navigation connected Guildford to London, allowing barges to carry timber, grain, and even gunpowder. Today, it’s a tranquil haven for wildlife and walkers alike, with its towpaths offering stunning views and peaceful moments.
