In the cold New Jersey winter of 1981 Bruce Springsteen came off his most successful tour for the hit album, The River. By most accounts he was the biggest rock star in the world But, Springsteen was restless to record songs that were haunting him. Sleepless nights and isolation had him confined to a loneliness he couldn't put into words. These feelings pursued him with so much intensity he fell into a depression that wouldn’t let him go. Then he settled into an old, rented home in the New Jersey countryside with newly made primitive recording equipment. There, with the help of one close friend, he sat on the edge of his unmade bed and recorded the songs that would become the now classic album, Nebraska. The songs were recorded solo acoustic with minimal overdubs & instrumentation. It was raw, and the songs emerged from impressions of childhood memories of neglect and abuse from his alcoholic father.
Nebraska became a bit of light during a very dark night in the artist's life
With Born in the USA poised for release, Springsteen chose to record this album of songs of despair, brokenness and heartbreak rooted in the American folk, blues and gospel traditions. The album was released without promotion, tours or publicity. Nebraska became a commercial and critical success charting at it’s peak of #3 on US & UK charts. Since its release it has been the subject of tribute albums and has endured the test of time. Today it is considered among Springsteen’s best albums. With songs like “Atlantic City,” “Reason to Believe” “Johnny 99,” and the title song, "Nebraska" based on the 1958 murder spree of Charles Starkweather, the album today still haunts and compels us to explore the shadow side of human nature similar to the writing of Flannery O’Conner and William Faulkner
The rest of Bruce Springsteen’s legacy needs little speculation. Before and after Nebraska he forged a new sound with innovative performance in studio and on stage and dynamic songwriting that already brought him phenomenal success with albums like Darkness on the Edge of Town & Born to Run and tours that built him an audience of devoted fans.
Since those days Springsteen and the E-Street Band have forged their way to legendary status and become a national treasure. And it's all portrayed in the fine new film, Deliver Me from Nowhere with Jeremy Allen White.
