Binley Woods Men's Academy is a new support group for young men aged 18-35 that opens from 7.30pm - 9.30pm on Thursday 4th September 2025. It's in The Morrison Room at Binley Woods Village Hall, Coventry, CV3 2AX. There's a bus stop right outside (number 86 bus) and lots of free parking at the rear.
It will initially run for 10 weeks on Thursday evenings and has been funded by Binley Woods Community Cafe
Binley Woods Men's Academy is in the foundation stages and is a friendship and support group. It does not provide any 'expert' help/advice/counselling by any qualified professionals, but it will provide understanding, kindness, empathy, friendship, shared experiences and practical help from ordinary people who want to help ordinary people.
Today's world seems to be dominated by social media, online connection and Artificial Intelligence, which is leading to 'appearance and isolation'.
The 'appearance' of everyone looking perfect, or happy, or wealthy is leading many men to isolate more from the world if they feel they don't match up to these standards.
Male suicide of young men is on the increase, and a quote from American psychiatrist Dr K is "Young men are not committing suicide because they have a mental illness, young men are committing suicide because they feel they no longer have a life worth living". This quote alone is the reason for Binley Woods Men's Academy to be formed.
Binley Woods Men's Academy will hopefully help to reduce isolation with young men and help them to connect with others. Discussions around current issues and problems men are facing may help lead to positive solutions. Practical help and encouragement can be given on many topics, including connecting with others, exercise, healthy eating, cooking simple and healthy meals, managing finances, addictions, basic car maintenance. Talking, listening and understanding can lead to trust, new friendships and social activities.
Can you only come along if you have problems or feel isolated? Absolutely not. We'd love to have men who are in a 'good' place in life and are able to share positive experiences.
If this sounds like something that would interest you, just come along. There are no forms to fill in, no membership is required, no details recorded. You can come as little or often as you want, you can sit quietly and listen or you can join in and share whatever is on your mind. All that is asked is for a donation of a minimum of £1 when you attend that will go towards future running costs.
As the group organically grows it will become steered by those attending, and can become the support group that you want it to be - whatever that looks like. For 10 weeks we are offering you those first steps to create positive change, if changing your life for the better is what you would like to do.
Thanks for reading.
