Set out on a one-of-a-kind journey to the heart of the Great Plains, where ancient history, frontier legends, and small-town charm come together for an unforgettable day in Hays, Kansas. Our adventure begins with a comfortable ride across the rolling Kansas landscape before arriving at the fascinating Sternberg Museum of Natural History. Step into a world where the past comes alive—literally. Towering prehistoric creatures, rare fossils, and engaging exhibits reveal the ancient secrets of the Great Plains. You’ll come face to face with life-sized dinosaurs, explore hands-on discovery rooms, and even see live animals, all under one roof. Whether you’re a curious adult or a young explorer, the museum offers something for every age and interest. After exploring the prehistoric past, we head over to Thirsty’s Brew Pub & Grill for a hearty buffet lunch that’s sure to satisfy. With a welcoming atmosphere and a mouthwatering BBQ spread—complete with classic sides, cornbread muffins, and honey butter—you’ll experience the kind of Midwest hospitality that makes Hays a hidden gem. Recharged and refueled, we make our way to one of Hays’ most iconic sights—its bison herd. Nestled in Frontier Park, this living symbol of the American West roams in a peaceful, open enclosure just across from Historic Fort Hays. Watch these magnificent animals, including a few adorable calves, as they graze in the Kansas sun. It’s a scene that feels like stepping back in time. Next, we explore the historic grounds of Fort Hays, established in 1867 to protect the frontier during the construction of the Union Pacific Railroad. Wander through preserved buildings like the blockhouse, guardhouse, and officers’ quarters while hearing tales of frontier soldiers, Buffalo Soldiers, and pioneers who shaped this region. Through modern exhibits and original structures, you’ll discover how Fort Hays stood at the crossroads of American history. We round out our day with a visit to the breathtaking Basilica of St. Fidelis, affectionately known as the Cathedral of the Plains. With its soaring limestone towers and magnificent stained-glass windows, this architectural marvel offers a moment of peace, reflection, and awe. Designated one of the “8 Wonders of Kansas” and a minor basilica by Pope Francis, it’s a must-see treasure nestled in the heart of Victoria, just a short drive from Hays. With hearts full and minds enriched, we make our way back home, carrying with us stories of dinosaurs, pioneers, bison, and beautiful plains cathedrals—a true celebration of Kansas’ past and present. Reminder- if you attend all four trips in this series, you’ll get 40% off the final trip! The Four Corners of Kansas series will continue in 2026.
