Mindfulness programs promise that staying present with our moment-by-moment sensations is a path to joy and wellbeing, but why? What do we find in such awareness that would lead to happiness? This one-day retreat will explore the potential of meditation using your ordinary sensations to cultivate curiosity, relaxation, and wonder. Bringing together classical Buddhist meditation instructions with insights from modern psychological science, we will practice, learn, and discuss methods for deepening our ability to touch and savor the rich flavors of our experience and understand their important place in the wisdom teachings of the Buddhist tradition.
Everyday Sensuality is a semi-silent urban retreat that will consist of guided meditation, short lectures, and discussion. The class focuses on skill building to help deepen meditative stillness and clarity during everyday situations.
Bring a sack lunch or a substantial snack, and wear comfortable clothes (layers are helpful).
Participants will:
- Read, understand, and implement key meditation instructions from classical Buddhist texts.
- Learn to use common external distractions as meditation supports.
- Practice using curiosity and wisdom to find wonder and joy in simple sensations
Open to the public; student scholarships available. Sliding scale $70-$100
