When: Thursday, August 7th - Friday, August 8th
Time: 5:30pm - 8:30pm
Location: Art Center of Corpus Christi Clay Studio
Skill Level: Intermediate
Description:
Lets play with clay! Join me for two evenings and let your imagination shape clay. I’ll demo and explain a variety of sculpting techniques, from using a template in a sculpture to hollowing sculpted pieces, and even the steps needed to create a simple bust. We’ll also explore what we can use as a ceramic ‘canvas’ to let your clay creation come to life. I’ll share some ways to ensure successful sculptural results when trying to shepherd your ceramics through the construction phase and various firings. I’ll also give some tips on how to properly cover and store your clay pieces so they can be worked on for extended times, as well as some ideas that may help prevent cracking of your sculpted works as they dry. Clay is a community, so be prepared to bring some of your own experiences to class so we can learn from each other. The first evening will consist of demos and the exploration of ideas to begin your creation. The second evening will be concentrating on your clay sculpture. Bring in your favorite clay and some tools and together we’ll begin to create some sculptural ceramics.
Skill Level: Intermediate skill level; you should understand basic hand-building techniques and ceramic concepts involved in firing ceramics.
Materials:
Favorite clay: almost any clay can be used successfully for sculpting; however, a few clays are a little more difficult so I’d recommend against porcelain and B-mix cone 5. The studio’s white stoneware is a great hand-building medium. Sculpting tools, needle tools etc. You don’t need many tools to sculpt; just clay, fingers and your imagination will do the job.
Artist Bio:
Liz Dumas-McMullan is a ceramic artist who grew up reading sci-fi and fantasy novels, so her bright fantastical clay creations are an extension of that sense of magic and unreality that she has always appreciated. From the mysterious depths of the ocean to the rocky terrain of the moon and the tiny microcosm of flowers and bugs, Liz’s work reimagines all the most secretive realms of the universe. She has won the Art Center of Corpus Christi’s art show ‘Dimensions’ Best of Show twice and exhibited her ceramic work in two solo shows. She has also won best of show at the Art Center’s Clay Studio annual show. Liz teaches advanced hand-building classes at the Art Center of Corpus Christi.
