Description:

Many students have expressed interest in throwing closed forms. In this class we will build on basic skills to collar in and close off a cylinder to make a hollow form. Then we will trim and alter the hollow form to make pumpkins and ghosts. To be successful in this class, participants should be able to throw a cylinder and have some practice at collaring in. You will learn the basics to manipulate clay on the wheel to create fully enclosed shapes, like hollow vessels. Students learn fundamental wheel-throwing skills such as centering and opening clay, then progress to specific techniques like collaring in and pinching to draw the walls together, forming a sealed cavity. The class involves hands-on practice with demonstrations, leading to the creation of pieces with a hollow enclosed interior. You will learn how to use a chuck for trimming, make the stems and the grooves for the pumpkins and add a curly top to add personality to your ghost. After trimming, we will cut out facial features to make them "come to life!" (Oh, wait, they’re dead!) Anyway, have fun with these seasonal creations.

Instructor Bio:

Jeff Turner is a Texas native and a graduate of Flour Bluff High School, received a bachelor’s degree in geology from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi and a master’s degree in geology from Baylor University. While filing out his degree plan, he discovered that a fine arts course was required to graduate and that’s where Jeff discovered his passion for ceramics. One class turned into several more and into a summer job before graduate school, turning out pots for school funds. Life put a hold on ceramics for nearly 30 years, and a career change brought him back to experiencing clay again. Jeff mostly produces functional ceramics on the wheel but is constantly exploring ways to push wheel throwing in whimsical and unexpected directions usually reserved for hand building or fusing thrown and hand building techniques. Jeff is a two-time winner of Best of Show at the Art Center Ceramics Show and teaches both wheel and hand building classes at the Art Center Corpus Christi.
