About the event

Corner Brook: Sensory Workshop for Cultural Ecosystem Services & Spruce Budworm
Are you interested in making artworks in nature? Do you want to explore how your senses (hearing, smell, touch, vision) shape your experience of natural spaces?

You are invited to workshops where Megan Samms, Simone Comenelli, and our research team will guide you through a series of nature-immersed, sensory art-making experiences. The goal of this research project is to explore the relationship between cultural ecosystem services provided by natural areas in Gros Morne National Park and human responses to the presence of spruce budworms.

Each workshop includes art-making activities, a short questionnaire, and a collection of heart-rate data using a FitBit watch. Sessions are approximately five hours long and take place during a hike, where you will be guided through artistic processes while focusing on your senses: hearing, smell, touch, and vision.

Workshop Schedule:

September 11 – Corner Brook, Cooks Lookout (1 km)

September 19 – Norris Point, Burnt Hill Trail (2.4 km)

September 20 – Cow Head, Lighthouse Trail (3.5 km)

September 21 – Woody Point, Lookout Trail (5.5 km)

Participation is open to all residents and visitors in the Corner Brook and Gros Morne regions. Participants must be 18 years or older and able to complete the walking trail with ease.

These workshops are part of a research project. The information collected will help natural sciences better understand how environmental changes—such as spruce budworm outbreaks—affect human experiences in natural spaces.
