We’re back with our book club “Coffee with Malanchuk”! This time, we will discuss “The Last Lullaby” with its author, James Hodson, who will join us online to talk about the book’s themes of memory, resilience, and the plight of Ukrainian children abducted during Russia’s war in Ukraine.
“The Last Lullaby” is a poetic novel inspired by true stories of Ukrainian children taken during Russia’s invasion. It follows Katya, a girl stolen from her home in Mariupol and stripped of her name, language, and homeland. Across the ocean, Thomas, an American student, stumbles into her world through letters—an unlikely friendship that deepens into a bond strong enough to sustain Katya’s will to survive. When her final desperate message reaches him, Thomas knows he must act, crossing political and personal boundaries to find her.
Haunting and unforgettable, the novel confronts us with the reality of stolen childhoods while asking: How long can we remain silent, and at what cost?
James Hodson is an economist, humanitarian, and writer. As CEO of the AI for Good Foundation and co-founder of Economists for Ukraine, he has advised governments, supported war-affected communities, and continues to fight—through policy, technology, and storytelling—for a future that protects the most vulnerable.

Він приєднається онлайн, щоби поговорити про теми пам’яті, стійкості та долі українських дітей, викрадених під час російського повномасштабного вторгнення.
“The Last Lullaby” – поетичний роман, натхненний реальними історіями українських дітей, яких було вивезено під час російського вторгнення. Це історія про дівчинку Катю, яку забрали з рідного Маріуполя, позбавили імені, мови та Батьківщини. За океаном Томас, американський студент, випадково натрапляє на її світ через листи. Згодом їхнє знайомство переростає у глибокий зв’язок, який допомагає Каті вижити. Коли ж надходить її останнє відчайдушне послання, Томас розуміє: настав час діяти — попри політичні та особисті кордони.
Ця книга змушує нас побачити реальність вкраденого дитинства і поставити собі запитання: Як довго ми можемо мовчати і якою буде ціна цього мовчання?
Джеймс Ходсон — економіст, гуманіст та письменник. Він є генеральним директором AI for Good Foundation та співзасновником Economists for Ukraine, а також консультував уряди та громади, що постраждали від війни. Зараз він продовжує боротися за майбутнє, яке зможе захистити найвразливіших.
