About the event

Etuk Ubong & The Etuk Philosophy (NG) + Ruth Belai (DK) at ALICE

Ubong debuterede i 2017 i eget navn, da han udgav Tales of Life.

In English:

Etuk Ubong

Etuk Ubong’s music is so vibrant and dynamic that it has been compared to the British jazz group Sons of Kemet. At the same time, it carries an unmistakable local Nigerian character thanks to the ekombi rhythms, which pulse through the explosive soundscapes. Ekombi originates with the Efik people of Nigeria’s Cross River region, where Etuk Ubong himself was born. None other than Seun Kuti has praised him as “one of the best things ever to come out of Lagos.” Ubong himself calls his sound “earth music” – organic and forward-charging, characterized by quick tempos, powerful horns, and strongly socio-political lyrics. Alice hosted Etuk Ubong in 2023 – and we cannot wait to welcome the Nigerian trumpeter and his band back again to our stage!

Etuk Ubong follows in the footsteps of a long line of afrobeat- and hard bop-influenced trumpeters in the vein of Tunde Williams, who was part of Fela Kuti’s groundbreaking band Africa 70. Ubong debuted under his own name in 2017 with the release of Tales of Life. Before that, he honed his craft in The Positive Force, the afrobeat ensemble led by Fela Kuti’s eldest son, Femi. His latest album, Africa Today, stands out for its socially conscious lyrics and a band of no fewer than 11 members. The result is magical, energetic, and irresistibly danceable.

Ruth Belai (DJ)

Before Etuk Ubong gets our bodies moving, Copenhagen based DJ Ruth Belai will take the floor. Ruth Belai is the co-founder of dj-collective PREE and creator/host of ASUNDR on Radio Drift. She brings a unique flair to every set weaving together a rich tapestry of afro-centric genres. Her deep love for music shines through, creating an unforgettable experience for every listener with her eclectic selections blending sounds both new and old, carried by her love for hiphop, afrobeats, neo soul, trap and dancehall.
