Join Petoskey Audubon on Tuesday, October 14 for a presentation on protecting the Kirtland’s Warbler on its wintering grounds in The Bahamas. The program begins at 7pm and is FREE and open to the public. It takes place in the conference room at Northern Lights Recreation, 8865 Harbor Petoskey Rd. (M-119), Harbor Springs.
Dr. Steve Roels will discuss how the American Bird Conservancy (ABC) is helping this special Michigan bird, which has become a symbol of conservation success and the positive impact of habitat restoration. Roels will share information about the dedicated local organizations and island communities partnering with ABC in The Bahamas to safeguard habitat and support conservation.
Roels and Petoskey Audubon Board Member, Sue Kurtz, will also highlight ecotourism opportunities, showcasing the incredible birds and breathtaking locations that make The Bahamas a truly unique destination for both conservation and travel.
Roels is Kirtland’s Warbler Program Director for American Bird Conservancy and Coordinator of the Kirtland’s Warbler Conservation Team. He earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 2018, studying bird ecology in tropical forest restorations. He has conducted field research in Michigan, Kansas, Texas, Colorado, Vietnam, and Panama. His scientific work has been published in peer-reviewed journals including Avian Conservation and Ecology; Restoration Ecology; and Agriculture, Ecosystems, and Environment.
Kurtz is an avid birder from Petoskey and a Board member of Petoskey Regional Audubon Society. She visited the Bahamas in March of 2025 as part of an American Bird Conservancy trip. She started birding in 2017, regularly guides bird walks in the area and shares her bird photography regularly.
