A Return to Radical Physicality
Puppetry has a unique authenticity through its inherent trustworthiness as a radically physical artform. As the rise of Generative Ai leads us to question the integrity of a whole lot of creative output, performance may have an edge through a creativity that exists unmediated, person to person. How might we leverage this in the arts and cultural sector to build public value around what we do?
Sam Routledge is a creator and director of contemporary performing arts for children. He has a strong record of innovation in the field and initiates work for theatre’s, schools and public spaces. He has a B.A. in Communication (Major – Theatre / Media) from Charles Sturt University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Puppetry from the Victorian College of the Arts Melbourne.
His work has been presented by leading contemporary arts venues and festivals across the USA, Australia, North Asia and the UK including the Royal Shakespeare Company, The Lincoln Center (New York), the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Washington), Edinburgh International Children’s festival, Taipei Children’s Art Festival, Vancouver International Children’s Festival, Sydney Opera House and The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts (Los Angeles). He collaborated with the Haya Cultural Centre in Amman, Jordan on a new production in 2018.
