About this Event

-TETHER: A Dance Workshop-

A dance and movement workshop for all levels of experience. This intergenerational workshop is open to the LGBTQIA+ community and allies. Participants will practice sensing and interacting with one another non-verbally. We will play games that require us to problem-solve collaboratively, and most importantly, we’ll move our bodies together!*

*Some games will invite participants to make physical contact with each other. We will practice consent and prioritize one another’s boundaries at all times.

Details about performance - TETHER Tickets, Multiple Dates | Eventbrite

A contemporary dance performance exploring physical, relational, and psychic entanglement. Dancers enact a physical and relational web - they link body parts, crawl over/under, carry, hold, wrestle, dodge, collide and merge with one another. All to a mesmerizing live soundscape by composer Raven Grant. Created by Alfonso Cervera, Mercedes Hicks, Elizabeth Sugawara and Mollie Wolf.

About the teaching artists:

Mollie Wolf (she/they) is a mountain woman from Colorado, with strong ties to Los Angeles, residing in Columbus, OH. A free-lance choreographer, installation artist, filmmaker, and creative producer, Wolf engages in interdisciplinary art-making and collaborative processes. As an educator, Mollie’s underlying goal is to challenge the students’ creative facilities while building inside each of them a foundational layer of self-trust. In addition to teaching at Denison University, Wolf is a creative producer for music festivals, where she oversees production of immersive installations and directs interactive performance. Wolf holds a BFA in Dance and a minor in Ethnic Studies from the University of Colorado, as well as an MFA in Dance from the Ohio State University.

Mercedes Hicks (she/they) is a graduate of the Ohio State University, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance. During her time in the dance department Mercedes performed in a variety of faculty and student works in styles including but not limited to contemporary, modern, ballet, west african, and house. She also worked directly with Bebe Miller, Sidra Bell, and the Limón company's artistic director Dante Puleio. In 2022 she spent a short summer semester in Denmark where she was introduced to Danish gymnastics and release technique. Mercedes is currently a guest artist and teacher at Hixon Dance.

Alfonso Abraham Cervera (he/him), also known as Fonzy, is a first-generation queer Mexican American artist, educator, and choreographer based between Los Angeles, CA and Columbus, OH. He is an Assistant Professor of Dance at The Ohio State University and co-founder of Primera Generación Dance Collective, named one of Dance Magazine’s25 to Watch in 2025. Cervera’s work explores queer Mexican American identity through a hybrid movement practice that merges Mexican Ballet Folklórico and contemporary dance, creating living archives rooted in rhythm, memory, and community. His choreography has been presented nationally and internationally, and his work has been supported in recent years by the Greater Columbus Arts Council.

Elizabeth Sugawara (they/she) is an interdisciplinary artist, fun seeker, and dance maker. They hold an MFA in Dance from The Ohio State University highlighting their work in intergenerational processes, community dance-making, and K-12 adaptive curriculum. Through their creative practice with people, Elizabeth is deeply invested in organizing, facilitating, and developing creative experiences for multiple populations spotlighting participants moving with Parkinson’s, dancers with Alzheimer’s, adults 50 and up, participants in prisons and county jails, accessible art spaces for K-12 youth, undergrad/grad university students, and intergenerational dance ecosystems. She has created and presented work at the Texas Dance Improvisation Festival, National Dance Education Organization, Inhale/Exhale Performance Series, and Pedagogy and Theater of the Oppressed Conference.
