The 18 Challenge is a monthly hiking series hosted by Outdoor Pursuits designed to gradually build endurance and confidence throughout the season — culminating in a final 18-mile challenge hike on September 13 at Burr Oak State Park. Two Outdoor Pursuits Hiking Leaders will attend each hike.
Each month, we increase mileage in preparation for the final 18-mile hike in September.
March 14th 3.14 Miles - 9:30 am at Chestnut Ridge Metro Park. Pie will be provided after hike in celebration of PI Day!
April 25th 6.5 mile - 9:00 am at Alum Creek State Park Rocks and Roots South Loop at Alum Creek State Park.
May 9th 9 Miles - 9:00 am at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park.
June 11th 12 Miles - 8 am at John Bryan State Park (also including John Bryan, Clifton Gorge, Glen Helen). Pack a Lunch for the hike!
July 11th 14 Miles - 7:30 am at Mohican State Park - camping included for Friday & Saturday nights as needed). Pack a Lunch for the hike!
August 15th 16 Miles - 7:30 am TBD (most likely Tar Hallow if the park re opens by our date). Camping is included for Friday & Saturday. Pack a Lunch for the hike!
September 12th 18 Miles - 7:30 am Burr Oak State Park. Camping included for Friday & Saturday. Pack a Lunch for the hike!
You can register for a single hike — or commit to the full series. But you must register to attend.
“18 Challenge” hikes are free to attend. Outdoor Pursuits membership is encouraged — or a suggested $20 donation — to help cover:
• Insurance coverage
• Volunteer leader support
• Administrative costs
Several hikes include optional group camping:
Friday/Saturday camping is available for the following hikes:
- April hike includes a Backpacking 101 Clinic and group camping weekend
- July, August, and September hikes include reserved group campsites
